In Folk Rock, the intimacy of acoustic folk with the power of rock

Progressive folk rock, or prog folk, is a genre born in the early ’70s in the United Kingdom, blending the melodies and instruments of traditional folk music with the complexity and experimentation typical of progressive and psychedelic rock.

The history of prog folk develops mainly in the United Kingdom between the late ’60s and the first half of the ’70s, evolving from the British folk revival.  Groups like Fairport Convention and Pentangle begin electrifying traditional music, while artists like the Incredible String Band introduce exotic elements, free musical structures, and visionary lyrics. This mix of acoustic and experimental sounds lays the groundwork for the genre’s birth.

In 1971 “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull is released, an album that blends hard rock, philosophical lyrics, and acoustic folk sections led by the transverse flute.  Groups like the Strawbs move from pure folk to a keyboard-rich symphonic rock featuring the Mellotron, while bands like Gryphon combine medieval and Renaissance music with progressive rock, using historic instruments such as the bassoon and the crumhorn.

In the second half of the ’70s, public interest shifts toward more immediate, raw sounds.  Despite this, historic bands like Jethro Tull keep producing genre masterpieces even at the decade’s end, with the folk-rock trilogy made up of “Songs from the Wood”, “Heavy Horses” and “Stormwatch”. Today prog folk survives in the influences of folk metal bands, neofolk, and modern progressive rock.

Progressive folk rock is a genre that blends the intimacy of acoustic folk with the power of rock, creating a unique and complex sonic experience.  It’s not simply about adding an electric guitar to a traditional song, but integrating the two souls in an organic, structural way.

At the heart of this genre we find acoustic instruments: 6- and 12-string guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, lute and banjo, which bring evocative melodies and suggestive atmospheres to life.  Joining them is the rock component, represented by the electric rhythm section (bass and drums) and vintage keyboards like the Mellotron, the Hammond organ and early synthesizers, adding depth and drive to the sound.

Instead of classic electric-guitar solos, progressive folk rock often relies on folk soloists such as the transverse flute (brought back into the spotlight by Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull), the violin and the bagpipes, which add a touch of originality and a distinctly folk flavor.

Another distinctive element is the use of odd meters and frequent time changes within the same track, creating a sense of motion and unpredictability.  Think of shifts from 4/4 to 5/4 or 7/8, keeping the listener on edge.

Progressive folk rock songs are often long, structured suites, divided into multiple parts that alternate medieval-tinged acoustic ballads with hard-rock explosions, offering a rich and varied musical journey.

Counterpoint—meaning the complex polyphonic interweaving among instruments—is another hallmark, inspired by classical, Baroque or Renaissance music, adding a dimension of sophistication and depth to the sound.

The vocals, often theatrical, clean and set like those of traditional storytellers, help create a narrative, immersive atmosphere.  Added to this are carefully crafted, layered vocal harmonies, typical of polyphonic choirs.

Finally, progressive folk rock lyrics are often poetic and rich in deep themes, ranging from folklore and Celtic legends to paganism, from nature to social critique in a historical key, all the way to mysticism.  A mix of elements that makes this musical genre fascinating and timeless.

Progressive folk rock is a genre split between the big names that defined its sound and the niche bands that explored its most extreme edges.  Think of Jethro Tull, true pillars of the genre, led by the flute and the unmistakable voice of Ian Anderson.  With albums like “Aqualung” and the late-’70s folk trilogy, made up of “Songs from the Wood” and “Heavy Horses”, they left an indelible mark on music history.

Then there are The Strawbs, who started as a bluegrass-folk band and then evolved, adding symphonic keyboards, including the Mellotron played by a very young Rick Wakeman, and epic rock sonorities.  Another key group is Fairport Convention, considered the fathers of traditional electric folk rock.  With albums like “Liege & Lief” they paved the way for the complex structures typical of progressive.

Moving into more experimental territory, we find Gryphon, unique in their kind for mixing Renaissance and medieval music with progressive rock, using period instruments like the crumhorn and the bassoon.  Amazing Blondel, instead, were known for their acoustic, pastoral approach, using lutes, theorbos and recorders to recreate Elizabethan-court atmospheres in a prog key.  And we can’t forget Horslips, considered the fathers of Irish “Celtic Rock”, who fused Celtic mythology and traditional Gaelic melodies with energetic rock riffs and complex concept albums.

Turning to female voices and psychedelic sonorities, we find Renaissance, led by the extraordinary five-octave voice of Annie Haslam.  Their style blended folk with strong classical-music influences and symphonic elements.  Mellow Candle, an Irish band behind a single, very rare cult album titled “Swaddling Songs” (1972), were marked by splendid female vocal interweavings and dark atmospheres.  Finally, The Incredible String Band, pioneers of psychedelic folk, influenced prog folk thanks to their use of free structures and a huge number of ethnic and traditional instruments.

Scandinavia boasts one of the most intriguing and darker progressive folk rock scenes in the world, deeply rooted in its own melancholic folklore and Nordic landscapes.

The genre saw a revival in the ’90s, with a dark sound that blended symphonic folk with vintage keyboards like the Mellotron and acoustic guitars. Garmana, a Swedish band, fused Swedish folk with rock and a dark, cinematic electronic edge, achieving major international success. Hedningarna, a Swedish-Finnish group, were acclaimed for their use of reconstructed ancient instruments and tribal, hypnotic rock rhythms. White Willow, a Norwegian band, reignited the Norwegian prog folk scene with their 1995 debut album, “Ignis Fatuus”, a masterpiece of symphonic, spectral prog folk.

Today, bands like Tusmørke, active and prolific in Oslo, keep carrying the tradition forward with their bizarre, theatrical prog folk, strongly influenced by Jethro Tull but sung in their native language. Agusa, a contemporary Swedish group, stand out for their long transverse-flute and Hammond-organ solos, inspired by Scandinavian folk melodies of the seventies.
