Post-rock: “using rock instrumentation for non-rock ends”

Post-rock, a genre born in the early Nineties, uses classic rock instruments like guitars, bass and drums in a non-orthodox way.  It stands out for often instrumental tracks, open structures, and a strong emotional and atmospheric charge. The term was coined by critic Simon Reynolds in 1994 to describe a sound that goes beyond the conventional rules of the song.

Post-rock emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States as a reaction to the commercialization of alternative rock and grunge. The pioneering groups decided to dismantle traditional music.

Bands like Talk Talk (with the albums “Spirit of Eden” and “Laughing Stock”) and Slint (with the masterpiece “Spiderland”) laid the foundations of the genre, combining a stripped-down rock with jazz, noise and ambient elements.

In 1994, music critic Simon Reynolds officially coined the term “post-rock” in Mojo magazine to describe Bark Psychosis’ album “Hex”. Reynolds described it as music that “uses rock instrumentation for non-rock ends”.

Bands like Tortoise blended electronics, dub and minimalism, helping make the genre fully instrumental and geometric.

The Golden Age was between the late ’90s and the early 2000s.

In this period, post-rock evolved toward orchestral, epic, emotion-laden compositions, defining the sound that today most people associate with this musical style.

Canada’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor gained attention with long apocalyptic suites driven by strings and distorted guitars, creating an intense, enveloping soundscape.  Scotland’s Mogwai, instead, refined the art of the “quiet/loud” contrast, alternating ultra-delicate passages with explosions of noise that grab the listener.

Sigur Rós, an Icelandic band, introduced unique traits such as falsetto and the use of a bow on the bass, creating a dreamy, celestial sound that makes them unmistakable.

Since 2000, the genre has spread worldwide and taken on a more standardized form, tying itself closely to soundtracks.  Groups like the Americans Explosions in the Sky, the Japanese Mono and the Irish God Is an Astronaut began composing shorter, more direct and cinematic pieces.  In recent years, post-rock has cross-pollinated with metal, giving rise to post-metal by bands like Cult of Luna and Isis, and with neoclassical music.

Post-rock departs from classic rock, redefining its conventions.  While using traditional instruments – guitars, bass and drums – it employs them as elements of an orchestra, creating soundscapes and textures rather than songs structured around the verse-chorus scheme.

Tracks develop linearly, without the typical structure.  They begin in a minimal way, almost imperceptible, with a single arpeggio or a faint beat.  Then, one after another, the instruments build tension, repeating the same musical theme while adding layers of sound, creating a kind of crescendo.  This culminates in an explosion, a powerful climax marked by a wall of distorted guitars, feedback and very high volumes.

In post-rock, the electric guitar is no longer an instrument for virtuosic solos or backing riffs.  It becomes a generator of sonic textures.  The heavy use of pedal effects like Delay (echo) and Reverb (reverberation) creates stretched, spacious, dreamlike sounds that recall ambient.  In addition, musicians often experiment with special techniques, such as using objects on the strings to produce original sounds.  A striking example is Sigur Rós, whose guitarist plays with a cello bow.

Post-rock tracks challenge radio timing and commercial listening habits.  Songs rarely last less than 5–6 minutes, often exceeding 15 or 20 minutes per track.  The absence of singing is another distinctive feature. The music is almost entirely instrumental. When the voice is present, it doesn’t tell a story with lyrics, but is used as an added instrument, with vocalizations, whispers or samples of voices recorded on the street or on the radio.

Bass and drums, too, abandon the syncopated or danceable rhythms of classic rock.  They often keep the same tempo, circular and hypnotic, for minutes, creating a solid, almost “trance” base on which the guitars can weave their melodies.  Some bands, like Tortoise, incorporate jazz and dub influences, with complex drum patterns and warm, deep bass.

Finally, post-rock breaks with the classic four-piece lineup, embracing classical music and electronics.  The inclusion of strings and winds, such as violins, cellos, trumpets and glockenspiel, is common to give an epic, melancholic tone.  Synthesizers, samplers and keyboards also find space, used to add drones (continuous background sounds) and digital textures.

Today, among the representatives of this genre, we also find Samuel Jackson Five and Sleep Token, two bands that interpret the evolution of post-rock and post-metal in very different ways, blending the genre’s signature expansive atmospheres with jazz, math-rock or modern heavy metal influences.

Samuel Jackson Five, from Norway, are a real gem of early-2000s instrumental post-rock.  Their style departs from the classic melancholic crescendos, offering energetic, unpredictable music heavily infused with jazz and math-rock.  They use geometric structures and complex rhythmic interlocks, enriching the electric-guitar sound with instruments unusual for the genre, such as the Rhodes piano, analog synthesizers and horns.  For anyone wanting to get into their music, the album “Same Same But Different” (2005) is an excellent starting point to appreciate their eclectic, dynamic style.

Sleep Token, formed in the United Kingdom, are one of the most important phenomena in contemporary heavy music.  While not a post-rock band in the strict sense, their style draws heavily on the dynamics of this genre.  They fuse the power of post-metal and djent with pop vocal melodies, R&B elements and electronic, ethereal atmospheres.  The use of dynamics is pushed to the extreme, with tracks that can start with minimalist piano and an intimate voice, then suddenly explode into crushing eight-string guitar riffs and devastating breakdowns.  Like many second-wave post-rock bands, for example Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sleep Token lean heavily into anonymity. The members perform masked and led by the frontman “Vessel”, creating a ritual, cinematic imagery.  The album “Take Me Back to Eden” (2023) perfectly captures this fluid transition between delicate ambient moments and bursts of heavy metal.
